This compilation of the proceedings of the forty years of jet aviation is unique in that the primary contributors to the book were also seminal contributors to the fascinating forty years of progress. The brief biographical sketches which precede each chapter give but an inkling of the fundamental importance of the contribution of the authors. The articles themselves, however, convey the essence of the often revolutionary changes they imposed upon our life and times.

The grand narrative of The Young Turk Legacy and Nation Building is that of the essential continuity of the late Ottoman Empire with the Republic of Turkey that was founded in 1923. Erik Jan Zurcher shows that Kemal's "ideological toolkit," which included positivism, militarism, nationalism and a state-centred world view, was shared by many other Young Turks. Authoritarian rule, a one-party state, a legal framework based on European principles, advanced European-style bureaucracy, financial administration, military and educational reforms and state-control of Islam, can all be found in the late Ottoman Empire, as can policies of demographic engineering. The book focuses on the attempts of the Young Turks to save their empire through forced modernization as well as on the attempts of their Kemalist successors to build a strong national state. The decade of almost continuous warfare, ethnic conflict and forced migration between 1911 and 1922 forms the background to these attempts and accordingly occupies a central position in this volume.
This is a powerful history reflecting and contributing to the latest research from a leading historian of modern Turkey. It is essential for all readers interested in the history of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, and for an understanding of a key player in the politics of the Middle East and Europe.

A high-quality, comprehensive overview of the Aleut, Yupik, and Inuit cultures that's filled with luminous full-color photographs, reproductions, and maps. The text is divided into three long chapters: ``The Hunting Way of Life''; "`Never Weary of Laughter,'" which speaks of family and community life; and ``A Struggle to Preserve Tradition.'' Extensive information in each category provides even those new to the subject with solid, even-handed material delivered in a respectful tone. Six photo essays and many shorter photo-and-text treatments are interspersed throughout. Two teach about contemporary hunting experiences, and several illustrate modern adaptations in 20th-century Inuit culture. ``Contests of Strength and Dexterity'' highlights the annual World Eskimo-Indian Olympics held in Fairbanks each July. ``The Messenger Feast'' examines Kivgiq, a celebration being revived on Alaska's North Slope during the darkest, coldest months. In comparison, E.S. Burch's The Eskimos (Univ. of Oklahoma, 1988) offers a similarly well-illustrated overview for high school and adult readers. People of the Ice and Snow is an excellent source for YAs.

Headings for articles are in bold type and there are guide words at the top of each page. Type size is generous. Guerrilla warfare may well be seen as a 20th century development, although its origins go back to the dawn of warfare. It is probable that insurgency & counter-terrorist actions by superpowers & lesser nations will become the most likely use of military power in the coming decades. This study is an historical examination of the development of counter-insurgency & counter-terrorist warfare. As well as an assessment of the tactics that have been effective, the author emphasizes the importance of intelligence in these operations, reviews the weaponry used, & analyzes the training of 3 elite special warfare units. Washington was the second of a new class of extremely fast and powerful battleships built after the collapse of the naval limitation treaty. The ship was laid in 1937, commissioned just seven months before Pearl Harbor, and decommissioned after seven very active years. Washington saw service in the North Atlantic, then in all the major campaigns of the Pacific. Musicant, using primarily the ship's log and interviews with dozens of crewmen, has put together an absorbing chronicle of naval war. This is shipboard history; anything that didn't happen on or to the Washington gets short shrift. Musicant is also the author of a history of armored cruisers. Highly recommended for naval buffs and subject collections.

Ukraine's struggle for a national identity plagued this former Soviet Union state long before the Cold War shook the world. Its central location between Eastern Europe and Western Asia invited many different cultures to settle the land, ultimately populating a powerful early medieval society known as Kievan Rus. However, readers will learn how Kievan Rus's Golden Age quickly crumbled with decades of Mongol invasions, Polish-Lithuanian occupation, and Russian empirical ruling. Explore how Ukraine flirted with independence in the early 20th century, only to be quickly taken over by harsh Soviet rule in 1922. Despite its independence from the USSR in 1991, devastating consequences of the socialist rule have allowed the world to witness Ukraine's ceaseless efforts to attain a stable government, struggling through the poisoning of Viktor Yushchenko, rigged elections, and the Orange Revolution. Kubicek's survey is comprehensive and concise-a perfect resource for high school students and undergrads, as well as general readers looking to further their knowledge of this up-and-coming nation.

From 2003 through 2010, more than 200,000 men and women were deployed in Iraq. For seven years, they fought ferociously in the blistering sands in the Land Between the Two Rivers. Some fought for pride or survival, some to bring democracy to a forsaken land that has known only tyranny and strife. Scores of books have been published about the war, most criticizing the strategies and execution. Some have been personal memoirs capturing the heroism and sacrifice.

Twentieth-century Europe, especially Central Eastern Europe, has been largely defined by Russia and Germany. In this century, cultural and economic exchanges between the two countries were as active as the fires of hatred intense. The smaller states in between, with their unstable borders and internal minorities, suffered from the powers' alliances and their antagonisms.

The Cold War shaped the world we live in today - its politics, economics, and military affairs. This book shows how the globalization of the Cold War during the last century created the foundations for most of the key conflicts we see today, including the War on Terror. It focuses on how the Third World policies of the two twentieth-century superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union - gave rise to resentments and resistance that in the end helped topple one superpower and still seriously challenge the other. Ranging from China to Indonesia, Iran, Ethiopia, Angola, Cuba, and Nicaragua, it provides a truly global perspective on the Cold War. And by exploring both the development of interventionist ideologies and the revolutionary movements that confronted interventions, the book links the past with the present in ways that no other major work on the Cold War era has succeeded in doing.

Winston Churchill knew the power of words. In public speeches and published books, in newspaper and magazine articles, he expressed his feelings and laid out his vision for the future. His wartime writings and speeches have fascinated generation after generation with their powerful narrative style and thoughtful reflection.
This book contains one hundred extracts from his books, articles and speeches. They range from his memories of his schooldays, to his contributions to the debates on social policy and on war, his contributions in both world wars to the events and discourse, and his efforts after 1945 to see the world a better place.
Martin Gilbert, Churchill's official biographer, has chosen passages that express to him the essence of Churchill's thoughts, and which describe—in his own inimitable words—the main adventures of his life, and the main crises of his career with Gilbert’s own introduction and interlinking text. They give, from first to last, an insight into his life and thought, how it evolved, and how he made his mark on the British and world stage.
