All this castle building placed a heavy burden on the kingdom. The
nobles raided and harassed each other. Castles changed hands regularly,
often through trickery. As rivals engaged in a constant round of destruction,
they forced their people to work on the castle maintenance and rebuilding
(Documents 12–19). The common people, forced to do the
work, hated the castle builders.
