Hitler's Last Witness: The Memoirs of Hitler's Bodyguard
Author: Rochus Misch Hitler's Last Witness: The Memoirs of Hitler's Bodyguard Frontline Books ISBN: 1848327498 2014 Format: PDF Size: 12,7 МБ Language: English Pages: 256 After being seriously wounded in the 1939 Polish campaign, Rochus Misch was invited to join Hitler's SS-bodyguard. There he served until the war's end as Hitler's bodyguard, courier, orderly and finally as Chief of Communications. On the Berghof terrace he watched Eva Braun organize parties; observed Heinrich Himmler and Albert Speer; and monitored telephone conversations from Berlin to the East Prussian FHQ on 20 July 1944 after the attempt on Hitler's life. Towards the end Misch was drawn into the Fuhrerbunker with the last of the 'faithful'. As defeat approached, he remained in charge of the bunker switchboard as his duty required, even after Hitler committed suicide. Misch knew Hitler as the private man and his position was one of unconditional loyalty. His memoirs offer an intimate view of life in close attendance to Hitler and of the endless hours deep inside the bunker; and provide new insights into military events such as Hitler's initial feelings that the 6th Army should pull out of Stalingrad. Shortly before he died Misch wrote a new introduction for this first-ever English-language edition. The book also contains a foreword by the Jewish author Ralph Giordano and a new introduction by Roger Moorhouse.

A Detail on the Burma Front
Author: Winifred Hilda Beaumont A Detail on the Burma Front British Broadcasting Corporation 1977 Format: PDF Pages: 160 Size: 66 Mb Winifred Beaumont volunteered on impulse for the army nursing service, and reluctantly went abroad. She was already an experienced field theatre nurse, and thus in the Far East in 1944 a valuable piece of woman-power. In army parlance she was a Detail, a nursing sister who could be sent wherever she was most needed. For in that jungle campaign, seven times as many men were out of action from sickness or disease as were killed or wounded by the enemy. Her brief army career was crammed with living, and she describes it with affection and a great sense of humour.

For a period of nearly six years, the German U-boat force attempted to blockade and isolate the British Isles in hopes of forcing the British out of the war, thereby thwarting both the Allied strategic air assault on German cities and Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Occupied France. Fortunately for the Allies, the U-boat force failed to achieve either of these objectives, but in the attempt they sank 2,800 Allied merchant ships, while the Allies sank nearly 800 U-boats. On both sides, tens of thousands of sailors perished.

D-Day: The Battle for Normandy
D-Day: The Battle for Normandy (Illustrated Edition) Author: Antony Beevor Viking / Penguin Books Ltd. 2009 ISBN: 067088703X Pages: 448 Language: English Format: EPUB Size: 53 MB The Normandy Landings that took place on D-Day involved by far the largest invasion fleet ever known. The scale of the undertaking was simply awesome. What followed them was some of the most cunning and ferocious fighting of the war, at times as savage as anything seen on the Eastern Front. As casualties mounted, so too did the tensions between the principal commanders on both sides. Meanwhile, French civilians caught in the middle of these battlefields or under Allied bombing endured terrible suffering. Even the joys of Liberation had their darker side. The war in northern France marked not just a generation but the whole of the post-war world, profoundly influencing relations between America and Europe. Making use of overlooked and new material from over thirty archives in half a dozen countries, D-Day is the most vivid and well-researched account yet of the battle of Normandy. As with Stalingrad and Berlin, Antony Beevor's gripping narrative conveys the true experience of war.

Nautilus: The Story of Man Under the Sea
Author: Roy Davies Nautilus: The Story of Man Under the Sea Naval Institute Press 1995 Format: PDF Pages: 256 Language: English Size: 26.8 MB "Nautilus' tells the story of the submarine, a vessel which revolutionized naval warfare in the course of 50 years, and the men who designed them and worked on them. In their short history submarines and submersible craft have played a decisive role in two world wars and today they roam the oceans, bearers of nuclear arsenals, ready to surface anywhere and strike any target. The book starts with the dramatic story of how Russian scientists and naval officers set about the task of constructing a nuclear submarine from scratch and with little knowledge of advances in nuclear physics in the rest of the world. The story then goes back to the days of the early pioneers, and follows rivalries and developments up to the First World War. During the war, submarines went into conflict for the first time. The German U Boat commanders became heroes at home as they roamed the seas, sinking hundreds of thousands of tons of British shipping. After the war miniature underwater craft, used for commando raids and suicide missions, were developed. In the Second World War we follow the fortunes of three subs - one British, one American and one German - and share the experiences of hunted and hunters, in a conflict in which for the first time submarine operations were integrated into overall naval strategy with devastating effect.
