The Black Panthers A Story of Race, War, and Courage—the 761st Tank Battalion in World War II
Author: Gina M. DiNicolo The Black Panthers A Story of Race, War, and Courage—the 761st Tank Battalion in World War II Westholme Publishing ISBN: 159416195X 2014 Format: EPUB Size: 6,7 МБ Language: English Pages: 321 In a Segregated Military, the African American Armored Unit That Helped Patton Check the German Advance, Close the Rhine Ring, and Spearhead a New Postwar Army Known primarily for being the first African American armored unit to see combat in World War II and as future baseball star Jackie Robinson’s onetime outfit, the 761st Tank Battalion was forged in a devil’s cauldron of heat and prejudice at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. Here, most viewed the tankers as tokens in a racial experiment, rather than as fellow American soldiers who would actually be deployed to fight a common enemy. Led by a small cadre of white and black officers, the 761st trained to the pinnacle of its craft. The Black Panthers, as they soon were called, proved their battle prowess against other units bound for combat on the parched Texas training fields. For this, they earned a coveted assignment to fight under General George S. Patton and go head-to-head with the best of Hitler’s arsenal. Moving to the front in November 1944, trial by fire soon shook the unit to its core. Ambushed by a veteran German force, the 761st suffered heavy casualties in the confusion as they cut their way out of the trap. But the men rallied to overcome self-doubt and vindicate their losses. Quickly battle hardened, the tankers saw intense combat through November and when Germany launched its last-ditch offensive through the Ardennes in December, the 761st fought side-by-side with Patton’s Third Army. Moving swiftly, the unit helped check the German advance, cut resupply routes to the forces surrounding beleaguered Bastogne, and drove the enemy back, recapturing towns crucial to the final defeat of Germany. In The Black Panthers: A Story of Race, War, and Courage—the 761st Tank Battalion in World War II, historian Gina M. DiNicolo tells the full and unvarnished history of this important American fighting force. Relying on extensive archival research, including documents that had not been consulted in previous accounts, and interviews with surviving soldiers and family members, the author describes the unit’s training, deployment, combat, and individuals, such as Sgt. Ruben Rivers, one of only seven African American men awarded the Medal of Honor for World War II heroism. The professionalism, dedication, and courage of the 761st and other non-white units made clear that the strength of the American army in the future lay with integration—one of the enduring accomplishments of these servicemen.

A Job to Do: New Zealand Soldiers of 'The Div' Write About Their World War Two
Author: John Gordon A Job to Do: New Zealand Soldiers of 'The Div' Write About Their World War Two Exisle Publishing ISBN: 1775591301 2014 Format: EPUB Size: 7,7 МБ Language: English Pages: 336 What was it really like for the soldiers of 2 New Zealand Division in the Second World War? How did they spend their time and how did they see their lives as servicemen, from training at home and sailing off to war, to setting up camp, relaxing off-duty, fighting in hostile environments and possibly being taken prisoner? This anthology is a personal selection of material describing the experiences of these men, with the great majority of the collection written from within its ranks. Colloquially known to its members as 'The Div', it was by far the major part of New Zealand's Second Expeditionary Force. In this book John Gordon presents a lively and illuminating selection of the published words of members of 'The Div' or those with close associations. The chosen extracts are drawn from memoirs, fiction, verse, news reports and magazine articles penned by soldiers of all ranks. The result is a compilation of the written views and experiences of over 80 insiders, creating an intimate glimpse of life and war within 'The Div'. From the declaration of war to the return home, this is a sample of the experiences of well over 100,000 New Zealand men who served in the Division: how they coped with discipline and disaster, sacrifice and success. They write with the same frankness, humour, wry cynicism and understatement that they used to cope with the challenges of their war.

The Road to Stalingrad
Author: Collective The Road to Stalingrad (The Third Reich Series) Time-Life Books 1991 Format: PDF Pages: 200 Size: 27.4 MB The Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943) was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in the south-western Soviet Union. Marked by constant close quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians by air raids, it is the single largest and bloodiest battle in the history of warfare. The heavy losses inflicted on the Wehrmacht make it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the whole war. It was a turning point in the European theatre of World War II–the German forces never regained the initiative in the East and withdrew a vast military force from the West to replace their losses.

Brown Duels in the Sky: World War II Naval Aircraft in Combat Naval Institute Press 1988 Format: PDF Pages: 248 Language: English Size: 40.5 MB Eric Brown was the top test pilot for the Navy and has flown many of the planes in this book, some of them in anger. In this book the author runs chronologically through the war moving between the various naval theatres. He describes the nature of the warfare and follows the various battles giving a clear commentary of what happened. He introduces each new aircraft (including new marks) as they appear in the story. He then describes the specifications from a pilot's view before giving it a final verdict, describing its good and bad points. He does this for both Axis and Allied aircraft and then goes on to compare each allied aircraft against each axis aircraft before providing a verdict on how they would fare if they met. Not only is this a brilliantly informative book, it's a very easy read. It even gives you theoretical combat comparisons, such as Mustang IV versus Spitfire XIV. Find out how the Corsair II would fare against the FW190A-4.

The Imperial Japanese Army: The Invincible Years 1941-1942 Osprey Publishing Osprey General Military ISBN: 1782009329 2014 Format: PDF (e-book) Pages: 375 Size: 8 Mb Language: English The German offensives which crushed Poland in 1939 and swallowed most of Western Europe in less than two months in 1940 have been well documented and heavily studied, however, the overall picture of the remarkable Japanese offensive land campaign in 1941–42 has received less attention. In this fascinating new book, Bill Yenne documents the years when the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) was conducting its equally unstoppable ground campaign in the Far East, and unlike other books on this subject, he studies the campaign from the Japanese point of view. He reveals how the IJA were able to conquer huge swathes of Southeast Asia in a little over eight weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Using first-hand accounts from Japanese sources, Yenne reveals the tactics and mindset of the IJA during their offensive, detailing the capturing of Manila, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Burma, and the Dutch East Indies.

Mosquito: The Original Multi-Role Combat Aircraft Author: Graham Simons Pen & Sword Aviation 2011 ISBN: 1848844263 Pages: 256 Language: English Format: EPUB Size: 10 MB During the history of aviation there have been very few aircraft that have achieved immediate success when entering front-line service. The de Havilland Mosquito was one such aircraft. It was not designed to an RAF requirement, but was the result of an initiative of the designers and builders to utilize the skills of woodworkers and the relative abundance of wood in the crisis years of World War II. The result was an airplane that could be built quickly, was extremely fast and extremely versatile. The pilots loved it. This book describes how it was built and utilizes many hitherto unpublished photographs from the design studio and production lines. It illustrates and explains the many different roles that the aircraft took as the war progressed. Fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, night fighter - there were few tasks that this brilliant design could not adopt.
