Stone and Mortar

Into this land of earth and timber architecture the Romans introduced stone and mortar. Heirs of a long tradition of masonry building in the Mediterranean world, the Romans perfected the use of materials and techniques such as rubble and concrete, bricks and mortar, and arches and vaults. Masters of efficient organization, they laid out rectangular army camps and cities with major crossing streets and regularly disposed houses or barracks.
