Juin proposes an entirely new plan

In the French Expeditionary Corps, which had taken over from the British X Corps in the Garigliano bridgehead. General Juin was not satisfied with the objective assigned to him, Monte Majo. It was the same kind of narrow turning movement "within rifle range” that had led to the Belvedere butchery and the setbacks at Cassino. So on April 4 he set out his ideas on the manoeuvre in a memorandum to General Clark. In his opinion, instead of turning right as soon as Monte Majo had been captured, "they should infiltrate under cover of surprise into the massif dominated by the Petrella and seize the
