Until the day when the great air terminals no longer need long runways, the airplane is—in words attributed to Thomas Edison—"only half invented." Ever since the Wright brothers were airborne at Kitty Hawk, aviation pioneers and engineers have recognized the need for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft and short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft.
