Little Wenham

Ham Hall, such

Although identified on the Ordnance Survey map and the gateway as a castle, the title is incorrect. This is not a castle, but a medieval manor house. In fact, the name castle has only been used since 1873; before that time it was known as Little Wen-

Its survival in a superb state is unique in Suffolk, and

I make no apologies for my inclusion of it.

There is no access to the house itself as it is someone’s home. The owner requests privacy and this of course must be respected. The main entrance to the house is along a private road but there is a public footpath and so you can get fairly close on foot. By the main gateway the path proceeds along by the moat and leads to the church, giving glimpses of the house through the trees.

For the less energetic, a car can be driven to the church of St Lawrence down a bridleway which is by the Queen’s Head public house.

View of the castle is from the churchyard. The church, built at the same time as the house, contains many fascinating features including brasses and other monuments. It is now redundant and kept locked, but the key can be obtained from the Rectory in Capel St Mary.
