Sent Columbus to the New World - 17 April 1492

Isabella of Castile united the Spanish Kingdoms and funded the discovery of the century

Remembered as the 'Mother of the Americas' by some, to others, Queen Isabella I of Castile will always be remembered as the architect of the Spanish Inquisition that ravaged Europe during her reign and for decades afterwards. She and her husband Ferdinand II, King of Aragon, Naples, Sicily and Valencia, united the old Spanish Kingdoms under their rule and modernised their collective Kingdom, freeing it of debt and restructuring its politics. It was the beginning of Spain as we know it, and Isabella and Ferdinand made a powerful team.

When Christopher Columbus came to them seeking protection and finance for a voyage to discover the New World, they assisted him. On 17 April 1492, Isabella and Ferdinand signed a commission making him admiral of a funded fleet, and with that support planted Spain and its culture firmly in the Americas.

GAVE PROTECTION AND FINANCE TO CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, GIVING SPAIN A STRONGHOLD IN THE AMERICAS THAT STILL HAS A POWERFUL LEGACY TODAY

Financed Christopher Columbus' journey to discover the New World and raised the Spanish Inquisition to power with her husband Ferdinand II
