Gunter Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on, storing them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was not until he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. The author's excitement at the first encounter with the enemy in the Russian Steppe is obvious. Later, the horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit - their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. He is also posted to Romania and Italy, assignments he remembers fondly compared to his time on the Eastern Front. This book stands as a memorial to the huge numbers on both sides who did not survive and is, some six decades later, the fulfilment of a responsibility the author feels to honour the memory of those who perished.

Fighting Hitler's Jets brings together in a single, character-driven narrative two groups of men at war: on one side, American fighter pilots and others who battled the secret “wonder weapons” with which Adolf Hitler hoped to turn the tide; on the other, the German scientists, engineers, and pilots who created and used these machines of war on the cutting edge of technology. Written by Robert F. Dorr, renowned author of Zenith Press titles Hell Hawks!, Mission to Berlin, and Mission to Tokyo, the story begins with a display of high-tech secret weapons arranged for Hitler at a time when Germany still had prospects of winning the war. It concludes with Berlin in rubble and the Allies seeking German technology in order to jumpstart their own jet-powered aviation programs.

The Panther V evidenced a number of problems in combat, and this was the proof of the rushed development programme that was made obvious from the events at Kursk. However, despite its disappointing battlefield debut, the Panther is frequently hailed as the best all round tank of the war. This fascinating study by Emmy award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers draws on a wide variety of combat reports and unique primary sources to weigh up the facts in order to produce the definitive single volume overview of a legendary fighting machine. Included are numerous examples of wartime combat reports from both Allied and German sources, additionally there are a large selection of extracts from the Pantherfibel, the original crew training manual. This superb book is essential reading for anyone interested in tank warfare during World War II. This book is part of the \'Hitler\'s War Machine\' series, a new military history range compiled and edited by Emmy Award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers. The series draws on primary sources and contemporary documents to provide a new insight into the true nature of Hitler\'s Wehrmacht. The series consultant is David Mcwhinnie creator of the award winning PBS series \'Battlefield\'.

“Published first in Brazil as Su?stica sobre o Brasil, this examination of the rise and fall of German espionage in that country spent months on the best-seller list there and generated a national furor as former spies and collaborationists denounced it as a CIA ploy. Here, for the first time, are the colorful stories of such German agents as "Alfredo," probably the most important enemy operative in the Americas; "King," who was decorated for his daring exploits but who carelessly mentioned the real names of his collaborators in secret radio messages; the bumbling Janos Salamon; and the debonair Hans Christian von Kotze, who ultimately betrayed the Abwehr (German Military Intelligence).”

Most people who lived through the Second World War see it in rather simplistic terms. Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo started the war; they attacked the democracies; we gave them better than we got; and Germany, Italy and Japan got exactly what they deserved. Thirty years after the war ended one can afford to take a less emotional look at the greatest war in all history and examine its causes, course and results with a more critical eye. In history there are few genuine villains and even fewer genuine heroes.

ATTACKS is a classic in military literature. First published in Germany in 1937 under the tide Infanterie Greift An, it became a great success before World War II and played a major role in launching Rommel on the road to fame. The book went through at least eighteen printings by 1944, when the legendary soldier was forced to commit suicide because of his implication in the plot against Hitler. The US Army translated the book in 1943.

For the preteen and teen who enjoys reading about war, this series will be a welcome addition to a library. Each of the books includes background information about the causes of the war and the cultural divide that caused politics to clash with the common folk; this title has information about the German and Japanese desire for expansion in the decades prior to the official beginning of the war. A timeline, map, list of key players, and glossary are included. As with other titles in this series, additional maps placed throughout the book, instead of only two at the end of the book, would help in understanding how troop movements affected the outcome of the war, particularly with the large number of countries involved. A solid purchase for beginning researchers.

The turning point of World War II came at Stalingrad. Hitler’s soldiers stormed the city in September 1942 in a bid to complete the conquest of Europe. Yet Stalingrad never fell. After months of bitter fighting, 100,000 surviving Germans, huddled in the ruined city, surrendered to Soviet troops.
During the battle and shortly after its conclusion, scores of Red Army commanders and soldiers, party officials and workers spoke with a team of historians who visited from Moscow to record their conversations. The tapestry of their voices provides groundbreaking insights into the thoughts and feelings of Soviet citizens during wartime.
Legendary sniper Vasily Zaytsev recounted the horrors he witnessed at Stalingrad: “You see young girls, children hanging from trees in the park.[...] That has a tremendous impact.” Nurse Vera Gurova attended hundreds of wounded soldiers in a makeshift hospital every day, but she couldn’t forget one young amputee who begged her to avenge his suffering. “Every soldier and officer in Stalingrad was itching to kill as many Germans as possible,” said Major Nikolai Aksyonov.
These testimonials were so harrowing and candid that the Kremlin forbade their publication, and they were forgotten by modern history—until now. Revealed here in English for the first time, they humanize the Soviet defenders and allow Jochen Hellbeck, in Stalingrad, to present a definitive new portrait of the most fateful battle of World War II.

In D-Day: Intelligence and Deception, Jock Haswell provides a unique account of the intelligence work carried out on both sides of the English Channel during the period leading up to the D-Day landings. The book covers four main aspects of the story. The first, the operational aspect, concerns the problems of landing a huge invasion force on the beaches of a heavily-defended coast, by far the most difficult operation of war, and is discussed with reference to a selection of historical examples. The second, the intelligence aspect, deals with the collection and collation of information relating to both the preparation for attack and the defense of Eastern Europe. The third, the deception aspect, covers the immensely complex task of planting snippets of information and rumor in different parts of the world in order to build up a misleading picture of Allied plans in the mind of the enemy. The fourth aspect describes the actual result of the operation, and shows, in an account of the invasion, how far it was successful.

World War II began in September 1939. Within four months, the Nazis sank one third of the entire British battleship force, beginning with the daring entry of submarine U-47 inside the British defenses at Scapa Flow to torpedo the Royal Oak. In the first six months after America's entry into the war, six U-boats sank fully half the total registered tonnage of the United States. The East Coast beaches ran black with oil. Despite the experience of the First World War that had made clear the lethal potential of German undersea warfare, and the massive buildup of Nazi military might in the 1930s, neither of the two great Allied powers developed adequate antisubmarine defenses, and the weapons they did have were virtually useless.

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 is regarded as one of the best fighters of World War II. Designed by Kurt Tank, it first saw combat in the summer of 1941 and went on to be produced in several variants. It remains a hugely popular subject for aviation scale-modellers. This book, the first of two to cover the Fw190, provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to modelling the Fw 190's A, F and G variants in 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 scale. Key aspects such as creating mottled camouflage patterns, undercarriage and cockpit detailing, final weathering and finishing, and diorama bases to display your models are covered.

From Pearl Harbor to V-J Day represents a marked departure from the "big book" tradition in World War II literature. Billed as the first one-volume history of the American war, this 200-page study offers a compact but comprehensive and generally balanced account of America's experience in what the authors term "the worst and most horrible" of human conflicts. Incorporating elements of the "new military history" with more traditional approaches, D. Clayton James and Anne Sharp Wells recount virtually all of the major campaigns involving American forces and consider as well such diverse issues as economic mobilization, military medicine, the war's social consequences for women and children, and the global political ramifications of Allied victory.
